George Mumford attended the University of Massachusetts as a student-athlete, later obtained a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College and has been teaching mindfulness and meditation for the last 26 years. George has a diverse and impressive résumé of work experience, including his involvement with a mindfulness prison project, corporate executives and various professional athletes. In his new book; The Mindful Athlete - Secrets to Pure Performance, George shares his personal story along with the "Five Spiritual Superpowers" that are integral to the process of mindfulness.
I found myself completely enthralled by George's story. He shares the adversity he had to overcome from his childhood along with his experience with drug use and his subsequent recovery. The lessons learnt through his story alone makes the book a worthwhile read.
George continues his teaching by recounting examples from his past work experience and relating them back to his "Five Spiritual Superpowers" of mindfulness. He also reinforces his teachings by citing small but profound quotes from elite athletes, fictional Hollywood characters, health professionals, etc. His understanding and insight into the deeper meaning of these messages are of incredible value.
George Mumford's book exceeded my expectations. The information provided is both valuable and actionable. He provides the tools needed to begin the process of becoming a more mindful individual. In this regard, "The Mindful Athlete - Secrets to Pure Performance" can serve as either a leisurely read or a regular resource depending on the goals of the reader. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is intrigued by the fields of psychology, sport performance and anyone who would like to learn more about the practice of mindfulness in or out of a sporting context.
